. i'm bret baier. supporters of the u.s. military policy against openly gay personnel scores a major victory today. but half a world away, american service members mourn the loss of several u.s. troops in a tragic accident. as a nato helicopter went down in southern afghanistan, making this the deadliest year in almost nine-year war. reporter conor powell has details from from kabul. >> reporter: helicopter crashes are fairly common in afghanistan, most due to mechanical failure and sometimes weather. in the past, taliban hit and brought down u.s. and international helicopters. in this case, the military says there are no reports of enemy fire in the area when the helicopter went down. they're discounting taliban claims they shot down the helicopter. the helicopter went down in an area that was a violent and nasty part of afghanistan where the taliban do roam free and are very, very strong. in addition to the nine u.s. troops killed, three other people including a u.s. civilian were also injured. today's deaths bring the total number of foreign troops killed to 529, a single-year rec

in this parking area. neighbors pointed the area out to us and we found crime scene tape here as well. here's what police say happened next. >> they were trying to approach him to make contact with him. shots -- a shot was fired and the officer felt that he was in danger at that point and responded to that shot firing several rounds. >> reporter: but what exactly happened is not known for sure. police say the man, 28-year-old owe livier cohen -- olivier cohen was spotted with a rifle. it's unclear if he shot at the officers or that single shot heard was that of cohen shooting himself. still the officer felt the need to protect himself. >> the gunshot was heard by the officers that were responding and at this point everything of that nature is still under investigation by our criminal investigation division and some of those determinations are yet to be made. >> reporter: cohen was pronounced dead at the scene. the officer was not hit. the scene outside the cohen home in germantown friends of the family told us off camera that they have a hard time believing cohen would have attempted to harm a pol

in new york within the next couple of hours. our susan candiotti is in new york for us. susan, good morning to you. it seems sarah already has an itinerary set for her when she gets back. >> reporter: oh, that's right. she'll be busy with a news conference, or at least reading from a prepared statement when she gets back. of course, we're all looking forward to hearing that. you know, t.j., you can certainly be sure this will be a day of mixed emotions for sarah shourd. of course, she will be thrilled to be setting foot on u.s. soil for the first time in more than 13 months, but after all, she is leaving behind her two friends, including her fiance, shane bauer, to whom she became engaged while she was in prison in iran, as well as her other friend josh fattal. of course, they were released from iran and arrived in oman earlier this week. on tuesday she was met which her mom and her uncle at the time. and this followed secret negotiations that took place. our senior correspondent nic robertson has learned they began about eight months ago, and at first, he said, he learned from oman

go, but it is going to cost. reza sayah is on the story for us this morning. reza, good morning to you. how much does i iran want? >> reporter: $500,000, t.j. that's how much they want. this has been a bizarre process in iran, and no doubt a difficult one for sarah shourd and her family to go through, of course. initially iranian officials came out last week and said sarah shourd would be released. then they said she wouldn't be released. and now today, again, they're saying she c be released, in exchange for half a million dollars in bail money. the latest twist came today at a news conference by tehran's revolutionary court prosecutor. the prosecutor saying today that shourd's f sarah medical condition, iran is offering to release her for that ba ail money. i don't think there is any doubt that her famy is somehow going to come up with thatmoney. it is not clear at this point when that's going to happen and when she will be allowed to leave the country. as far as the other two hikers go, shane bauer and joshua fattal, the prosecutor said today they're not going anywhere, they'
